Crazy for Star Wars: When “no news” is “news”

Yesterday a “story” broke about an Obi-Wan Kenobi film to be taken forward by the Oscar nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot and The Hours). I got excited. Then I actually read the Hollywood Reporter article upon which the frenzy was based. The one sentence of “substance” in that article was as follows:-

Sources say talks are at the earliest of stages and that the project has no script. If a deal is made, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm brass.”

So effectively we are reading story about “talks at the earliest of stages”.

No Lucasfilm confirmation, no official sources. No definition of what “earliest of stages” means. A cup of coffee perhaps? A formal meeting at Lucasfilm? Kathleen Kennedy chatting to Stephen Daldry in the local Hollywood mini-market?  Bob Iger and Daldry playing golf?

I want to see a Kenobi film more than most. I want to see Ewan McGregor in it. I suspect this will happen in due course. Good things will come to those who wait. Let’s wait for some actual news before we all get our hopes up prematurely. In the meantime we have some delightful Star Wars content to come in the next few months – lets enjoy it!

  1. Like you, I want a Kenobi film too. But the thing is I don’t want another white dude directing a Star Wars film. This franchise needs some women taking charge of these projects, and it would be super awesome if such a high profile character like Kenobi was tackled by a female director like Patty Jenkins or Ava Duvernay.

  2. Oh man, I am the opposite. I am not interested in a Kenobi film at all. And, honestly, I roll my eyes whenever I see anything that’s not confirmed by Lucasfilm. I’m not sure if I’m jaded or just don’t care, but I no longer give a hoot about anything that does not come from LFL.

If this is true, I will try to refrain from judgement until I see what happens with the Solo movie.

    1. I’d agree that there is reason to remain skeptical until we know more, particularly given the Solo directing switcheroo that took place. I am interested in the film but my fear is that they will alter aspects of Kenobi in ways that just do not fit his character (See: Rey as Kenobi’s grandchild). I will walk away from Star Wars forever if I watch Ewan McGregor as Kenobi having sex with someone while he is on Tatooine protecting Luke. *shudders*

      1. Omg more than shudders. No no no no bad images. That would make me so sad. I just…can’t…sexualize Obi-Wan. It’s too weird. But yes – if Rey is his grandchild: booooooooo.

OH and I was reading a different post about the movie and they said that it could be a chance for Qui-Gon to appear again and I was like, “How did I not think of that??? YES to my FAVORITE character.”
